Why you should not start by choosing an AI tool
First, identify the work that consumes time. Technology is the second decision.
Companies often ask me which AI tool they should buy. It is an understandable question, but it usually comes too early.
Start where time disappears
First, find a specific process that repeats, slows people down, or creates errors. It might be copying order data, preparing a regular report, or searching for information in internal documents.
A well-chosen problem has three qualities:
- it happens often enough,
- its current form has a measurable cost,
- you can tell whether the solution has actually improved it.
Choose the technology only afterwards
Sometimes an AI agent will be the right answer. At other times, a straightforward automation or a simpler form will do a better job. The goal is not to deploy as much AI as possible. It is to remove work that creates no value.
A good first project does not need to be large. It needs to be specific enough for its value to be validated in weeks, not years.
